Founded in 1938, Guizhou Medical University (GMU), earlier known as National Guiyang Medical College, was among the first universities in China to be approved by the Ministry of Education to grant master's degree in 1981.

The university has established inter-collegiate relations with more than 20 universities and institutes from 12 countries in the world. It trained the students to become talented medical personal and promoted the development of the school in all aspects.

The School of Overseas Education (SOE), established in 2014, is engaged in the recruitment and management of international students and the teaching of Chinese to foreigners. SOE is featured with education in clinical medicine and has created its own teaching model in Chinese.

Currently, there are a total of 188 overseas students in the school, including undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine and medical masters from Cameroon, India, Ghana, Cambodia, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
