Guizhou's Miao flower drum dance rated excellent nationally

The flower drum dance of the Miao ethnic group in Songtao Miao autonomous prefecture, Southwest China's Guizhou province, was recently selected for the 2022 excellent Chinese sports and culture project, according to the General Administration of Sport of China.

The flower drum dance originated in Songtao's Zhengda town, and was popular in the area in the 1830s. It preserves the history, appreciation of the beauty, and philosophy of the Miao people.

The dance moves show the scenes of sacrificial activities, labor, entertainment, as well as imitate animals. It is popular among the locals and is performed during important festivals.

It has high scientific research value, social value and economic value, and has detailed information of ethnology, history and art. It can contribute to folklore research and art. It also enriches and improves the art of Chinese dance and protects the diversity of ethnic culture.

After years of development, the dance has more than 80 varieties, has been showcased in various provincial and national events, and performed in more than 10 countries and regions. In 2005, it was rated as a provincial intangible culture heritage item.

In recent years, the Songtao government has taken efforts to protect and pass down the dance, as well as raise public awareness of the dance.
